Ban on Lipsticks is Good for Health- They Can Kill You

sAccording to independent lab tests initiated by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, yes, some lipsticks available for sale in 2007 contain lead. The report, “A Poison Kiss,” names the brands tested and the levels of lead found in them. More than half of 33 top-brand lipsticks tested (61%) contained detectable levels of lead, with levels ranging from 0.03 to 0.65 parts per million (ppm). One-third of the lipsticks exceeded the 0.1 ppm FDA lead limit for candy – a standard established to protect children from directly ingesting lead. Among the brands tested found to have the highest lead levels were L’Oreal, Cover Girl and Christian Dior – showing that the more expensive brands are no safer than drugstore brands .

The MPKB has been alledged to have ban lipsticks for all female workers in under MPKB jurisdiction. Although MPKB has denied that piece of news, I have made my own research on the subject. And I can confirm the denial issued by MPKB. All MPKB has done is to suggest a proper way of dressing for women.

Also, if any of my family members were to go to work, I would want them to dress the way MPKB has proposed for them to dress. I want them to be paid for their work, not for how they dress. Worse, they should not be paid for the part of their body that they wish to expose to the public. I think this is the most feminist proposal ever made by anyone to date.

In addition, Over the radio, I was introduced to an organization called “Campaign for Cosmetics Safety”. I went to their website at http://www.safecosmetics.org/ and I found out a lot on the dangers of ‘lipsticks”. It seems lipsticks are as dangerous as ciggerates, if not worse. The bone of contention is that all major lipsticks seem to contain an unhealthy amount of lead in their product.

Let me quote a part from their FAQ:
Q: Does lipstick really contain lead?
A: According to independent lab tests initiated by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, yes, some lipsticks available for sale in 2007 contain lead. The report, “A Poison Kiss,” names the brands tested and the levels of lead found in them. More than half of 33 top-brand lipsticks tested (61%) contained detectable levels of lead, with levels ranging from 0.03 to 0.65 parts per million (ppm). Among the brands tested found to have the highest lead levels were L’Oreal, Cover Girl and Christian Dior – showing that the more expensive brands are no safer than drugstore brands.

If one were to go down the FAQ one will discover these facts:

a. Most recent scientific studies show there is no safe level of lead for humans
b. The FDA has no safety limit for lead in lipsticks
c. There are brands of lipsticks that doesn’t have leds in them
d. Even in America, they have not finished testing the entire range of lipsticks in the market.
So, they have no complete list of lipsticks free from led. I think the situation is worse in Malaysia. I doubt we have any sort of list. I haven't done any research in the Malaysian context. Maybe the kind readers can enligthen me.
e. The list of lipsticks tested can be downloaded in their report entitled “A Poison Kiss”.
The danger of lead in our body is explained in a statement they published in their website and I quote:

“Lead is a proven neurotoxin that can cause learning, language and behavioral problems such as lowered IQ, reduced school performance and increased aggression. Pregnant women and young children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure. Lead easily crosses the placenta and enters the fetal brain where it can interfere with normal development. Lead has also been linked to infertility and miscarriage.”

The same website reports that the California senate has voted to ban led from lipsticks. Maybe that is why so many women in Malaysia are suffering from various types of cancer, namely breast cancer. But, I can only guess.

I am sure that the suggestion made by MPKB didn’t take into account the dangers of led in lipsticks, but having known the dangers now, I feel the step taken by MPKB should be lauded. At least until all the lipsticks in Malaysia have been tested for their led content.

As for wearing lipsticks in public, anyone with any sense will tell u that lipsticks does attract attentions especially of the opposite sex. Not wearing lipsticks attracts less attention, I will testify to that.

There are those who says that lipsticks, clothes etc should not be blamed for the occurrence of rape and moral degradation. In the case of Suzaili, she was raped and murdered in spite of wearing a tudung.

My take on it is: if a locked house still gets broken into, does that mean we should stop locking up our houses. As for high heels, if your work requires that you stand up for 8 hrs a day, minimum, then by wearing a high heels, you'll be lucky not to have blisters the size of pancakes at the end of the day. It's not a good idea to wear high heels, in that case.

MY REPLY: I am concerned about women. My mother is a woman, my sisters are women, my wife is a woman and i am expecting a daughter.

It's just that allowing my female family to go around with their body parts exposed is NOT my idea to "concern about women".

It is a form of EXPLOITATION of women. If I don't like the women of my life being exploited, i must also not allow other women to be exploited as well

MY REPLY:
Dear anony,

The issue now is led. Led of any quantity is bad for humans.

AS for dye and other chemicals u say above, they may not be dangerous for us humans. Or maybe their quantity are so small that they are not dangerous at all.

But in lipsticks, we're talking about led which is outright poison to humans. In any quantity.

So please look pass the politics and start being aware of this issue.

Don't u wonder why there are so may women nowadays suffering from all sort of cancers? Namely breast cancer.

Tulang Besi,

I am a Muslim woman.

"MY REPLY: I am concerned about women. My mother is a woman, my sisters are women, my wife is a woman and i am expecting a daughter.

My son is a man, my husband is a man, my brother and father also are men and i am expecting a baby boy next month.

Can u please ensure that Muslim men do not practise polygamy as it breaks up the family institution and produces many social problems.

I am also against the huge numbers of men practising drug addiction to Heroin, wife battering and incest. I think thats more toxic to the lip stick or any dye.

This is a bigger " EXPLOITATION " of women than males being concerned about lip stick harming their wives.

Please gets your priorities right before making stupid comments

MY REPLY: So, if we outlaw polygamy, do we also legalize adultery?

You see, polygamy is not encouraged in Islam, and neither is it prohibited.

It is an alternative to adultery. You will see that nations which prohibits polygamy are actually hypocrites as they are neck deep in adultery.

As a result, the marriage institution becomes a mockery and sanctity of marriage becomes seriously undermined. In other words, the institution of marriage has lost it's sacredness.

What follows is the breakdown of the family institution which then results in numerous social problems i.e. homosexuality, teenage pregnancy, rape, murder and many more.

Then, u might say "even if u allow polygamy, u will still have adultery".

I then will reply: that is why the Islamic laws must be taken in FULL. THis is because Islam punishes adulterers to death by stoning.

After all, adultery is an ancient crime. Modern men should not commit adultery. Only primitive men do. So it requires primitive punishment.

In essence, Islam not only prohibits fornications, it aims to prevent it. Fornication is the number one factor in the breakdown of a seociety and families.

And Islam is willing to adopt polygamy just for the sake of maintaining the sanctity of the family institution.

Some women I know they do not mind their husbands having sex with other women just as long the husband do not take another wife.
These women would rather their husband commits the gravest of crime than to do what GOd wants them to do.

Malayamuda,

Whatever your belief on Islam, please heed the warning on lipsticks as written in my article.

I have always asked why so many women suffers from breast cancer and such.

This could be the reason. Please beware.

MY REPLY: That is why I make so much noise about the wrong impression on the Taleban.

Whatever their weakness, the Taleban reduced heroin supply to the world by 95%.

And what did we do? we bombed them to kingdom come.

And the Taleban move to destroy their poppy crop is a direct result of the Wahabi policies.

hello Rahman, regarding your article on lipstic; i’ve this to say.

Had the directive on lipstic done on the ground of health concern, they should had made clear about it. As this would not had created such humiliating embarrassment to the religion of Islam particularly and muslim as a whole. Comprende!

MY REPLY: Naruto, you still owe me the proof of the existence of lipstick back in the ancient days.

Tell me, how did they pack their lipsticks? Did they use plastic containers or did they cover their lipstick with "daun pisang"

So If I were u i'd quit asking question and start looking for proof.

And there wasn't even a directive. It was just a suggestion.

Learn to read next time will ya.

And I am asking you for proof like this for your own good sake. I went to your blog and all i saw was rhetorics with very little valid argument to go by.

Much like this one.

Naruto,

Why are u running away? Why can't us stand and defend your claim. Maybe u need to learn one important lesson in life: not everyone can except your words without anything to back it up with?

You cannot expect people to believe every single claim that u make, you know. It's just not humane that way.

Also, people have a right to ask for proof.

That's a fact of life.

malayamuda said...

Tulang Besi,

More than proof we want a sane explanation.

Explanation which is accepted universally this time and age.

Here in Malaysia we use constitution as proof and shut people from questioning using absurd instruments as proof.

And if all else doesnt work we use ISA,OSA and other draconian laws.

All these laws are man made laws, it can be changed. We want scientific explanation with proof and if possible studies to claim its really a hazard.

Tulang Besi said...

dear malayamuda,

Our constitution says that Islam is the religion of the Federation.

In other words, being Islamic is actually being constitutional.
