Malay Nationalism Is Doomed To Fail Right From the Start

The truth is that UMNO is a party formed and led by British lackeys like Tunku Abdul Rahman, Dato’ Onn and many more. The British allowed UMNO to assume the lead role in Malaysia’s government as opposed to the more socialist Parti Kebangsaan Melayu Malaya. The British knows that as long as Malays stick to their “Malayness” they can never become great like they once were. Malays were once great and that ship has sailed. That way the British can continue to exploit Malaysia and subserviate Malaysia to their wishes for as long as they like. That is until the dawn of the Dr. Mahathir era, which incidently is not 100% Malay blood.

I had a very interesting discussion with a colleague of mine on the subject of Malays recently. It seems that Malays had once been a great superpower of the world, once upon a time. Specifically, the Srivijaya Empire which existed from the 7th to the 13th century. The Malays controled the Malacca and Sunda Straits for 600+ years. In fact, historians have said that the Srivijaya Empire is the longest lasting empire in the history of man.

The Srivijaya empire ranged from Sumatra, Jawa, Borneo, Makassar, Thailand, coastal Vietnam, Cambodia and the “Spice Island”. At that time, the Malays were feared and respected by everyone in the world. All the world recognizes the Malays as a superpower, at that time.

While it receives little attention from modern Western historians, Sri Vijaya was one of the longest lasting empires in human history. From it's founding in about 650 to it's defeat by the Javanese in 1290, Sri Vijaya controlled the Straits of Malacca for 640 years

In fact the name “Melayu” came from the “Kingdom of Malayu” which merged itsef to the Kingdom of Srivijaya to make it the longest lasting empire man has ever known.

The Malay Srivijaya empire is a truly “MALAY SUPERPOWER”. It was one of the most advance empires in the world. It had a language and a writing system called “Sanskrit”. Palembang used to have a Buddhist university and had a satellite campus in the Kelinga Kingdom (which is why we call people from India, Keling as someone from Kelinga kingdom in India).

In 650AD, a Chinese traveller wrote that he counted 35 ships from Persia alone in the harbor at Palembang. He said there were hundreds of ships from everywhere. The apex of Malay civilization of Srivijaya came in the form of “Chandi Brobodur” which is considered as one of the wonders of the world. To day, historians are still studying this particular landmark. The Malays can be proud of leaving the world an architectural landmark.

The capital was Muara Jambi and then moved to Palembang. Even now, the remains of the Srivijaya capital is yet to be excavated in Jambi. It is an area as large as 1500 hectres. It is equivalent to the size of Petaling Jaya just waiting to be excavated. To learn more about Srivijaya click here.

After the fall of Srivijaya, came Majapahit and many other smaller empires. When Malays converted to Islam they formed what we have to know as “Kesultanan” of Kingdoms. The marked difference is that each “Kesultanan” claims to be a satellite state to the Ottoman Empire. There was no “Malay Empire” anymore after that. We could say that Malays were nominally Ottoman, back then. Examples are Kesultanan Sulu, Melaka, Johor-Riau, Pahang, Perak, Kedah, Perlis and many more. The kingdom of Kelantan is known to have existed 1000 years ago, Kedah was known 2000 years ago. And many more examples but yet the Malay empire as big as Srivijaya has never come into existence anymore.

Indonesia had their Islamic Kingdom and governments too. For example, Mataram Singgahsari and a few more. Borneo was under Kesultanan Brunei until they sold Sabah and Sarawak to the British but they were smart to keep the oil.

The point I am making is that the Malays as Malays have enjoyed their golden age in the history of civilizations. If we observe nations like Greeks, Egyptians, Romans and many more, these peoples are not able to come out from their “slumber” and have remained in the background. They have been unable to lead the world as they once did. The term “empire” is not in their dictionaries anymore.

My friend theorize that ever since our and their golden age, there could’ve been a major transformation of thinking within the peoples who were once great. The lethargic mindset is a product of years and years of enjoying golden periods as world superpowers. So now, these peoples (Malays, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians) have lost the drive completely to emerge as a great nation anymore because of this lethargic mindset set inside their minds for centuries.

In short, we never woke up from our slumber yet and chances are if we stick to our racial identity we will never will.

MALAY NATIONALISM’S FUTURE IN MALAYSIA

Which is why I say that Malay Nationalism is doomed to fail right from it’s inception. The Malay Nationalism of Malaysia is birthed and championed by UMNO.

The only way Malays can become great is to assume other identities. UMNO is a party that wants to amplify the Malay trait. Since the Malay trait has been “cursed”, therefore, UMNO will only amplify the “curse” that has plagued the Malays for a long time.

Which is why I believe that Malay nationalism is doomed to fail. If the BN government falls and replaced by PR, then UMNO will cease to exist. UMNO cannot stand long without resources and without the ability to control the minds of it’s supporters with lies and deceptions.

The whole time since 1946, UMNO had relied on heavy handed tactics, frauds, lies and one-sided media coverage, not to mention abuse of government properties just to survive. Now how can that be great. For example, UMNO had to move to take over Utusan Melayu because the newspaper was very critical of UMNO and their leaders. They did this by force simply because UMNO is not a great party and they cannot survive in a place where information flows freely.

Yes, if not this year, Malay Nationalism will fail and it will cease to exist, just like the Srivijaya Empire. Except Malay Nationalism has a much shorter half-life then the Srivijayans.

Malay is not just ethnicity. It is history, culture, undertsanding, rich inheritence, way of life and Islam ... all rolled into 1.

All this while evolving to accomodate, live with and presevere in their lands that has suddenly become a prefered destination for immigrants from far away with a different way of life.

Believe it, embrace it or leave.

I see and comment from a neutral pont of view. I agree that sometimes, that you need a solid fact and quote of reference to backup your words, especially facts about the history of malays, UNLESS you stated at the beginning, its your humble opinion!

If not, people will shoot you for your lack of accuracy or lack of facts to backup your opinions.

2ndly, i agree with you. I believe these are the mindsets that have been passed on to us for centuries. IMHO, please imagine those were days from the kesultanan melayu days after the srivijaya empire. Those kesultanan IMHO are just a bunch of pricks and ketua kampungs who wanted to have their own land and rights to their lands for their castles. Do we seriously thinks that they can expand or become great?

If they are truly great like those with powers and empires, surely, in common sense 101, they will expand and be HISTORY. But infact, they are still at the same size without any expand in empire, hence, in conclusion, i believe they are just a bunch of ketua kampungs who wants their own lands and their scores of wives.

They do not wanted to be known in the future. You think they care about their 3rd generation down the road? Maybe but chances are slim. IMHO, i believe that their sole purpose in life during then, was to think about themselves!

Hence, these mindset of having 4 wives and multiple kids, and just lazing around the kampungs existed till today!

What i quoted is solely based on my understanding of peoples mindset, which is plain lazy, blame everyone else except themselves and at the end, they think about their own pocket!

I'm wondering if the Malay people commonly referred to are one people. Is this a case of many peoples with a shared language and tradition?

If Sri Vijaya was a Malay Kingdom , then are you saying that Malays were originally Hindus ?

Kindly enlighten

"In 1025, Rajendra Chola, the Chola king from Coromandel in South India, conquered Kedah from Srivijaya and occupied it for some time. The Cholas continued a series of raids and conquests throughout what is now Indonesia and Malaysia for the next 20 years. Although the Chola invasion was ultimately unsuccessful, it gravely weakened the Srivijayan hegemony and enabled the formation of regional kingdoms based, like Kediri, on intensive agriculture rather than coastal and long-distance trade."

There are lessons to be learned from history
Let's learn the good part and leave the bad part behind
Let's not distort any fact from friction in any story
In the final analysis just learn to be kind to mankind

The lessons of history, good and bad has to be learnt. Else we'll all be doomed to repeat the bad.

For it is the past that gives us context and meaning of what is to come.

I've learnt never ever to believe history written by oneself. Chances are, a third party account is usually more accurate, free of bias and context.

Basically, what you're saying is that when the Malays were Hindus, they were the best in the world. But when the Malays converted to Islam, they became the worst in the world.

and today we learnt that Mahathir's ancestors are from South India.

UMNO had a South Indian as a President....... and the Malays had a South Indian you lead them for 20 years .......

Thank You Palanivel

Melayu muda learn your history. Don't base ur knowledge on what ur school, books tell you only. Buajng vally discovery of hindu temple ruins etc never mentioned or highlighted in the malaysian media. Are Malays so embarrased of their heritage that they rather potray themselves these days as @arabs' rather than true malays. No one should be embbaresed of their pass. Its part and puzzle of civilization.
Denial is ythe worst enemy of the current Malays. Look at all the traditional ways and culture. Look at isiadat pertabalan Raja / sultan Malaysia..all are very much Hindu practises. Look at the kesusastraan Melayu. The stories etc..All these taught to me my a Malay lecturer in UKM.
Hindus have >5,000 years of civilization. So no worries if any culture has its(Hinduism) influence. Its a very fine and peaceful culture and religion after all.

Yes, let us all become Sri Vijaya, throw away Islam, become Hindus, and become great all over again in the world!! Syabas!!! I support you in self destruction of our nation!!

malayamuda said...

hurm,

so my ancestors were all Hindus ?

this is new to me ? no one told me this. I was made to believe that Malays were always Muslims !!

But I always wondered what were the Malays before the 14/15th century.

When ever I questioned, people chided me and told me not to ask stupid questions. Some even said I could be arrested under the ISA/ OSA for asking such questions.

Are we Hindus or Arabs ? We seem to have only borrowed culture .... what is Malay culture actually ?

Tulang Besi said...

Actually, Malays started off as Hindus, then during Srivijaya we became Buddhist, then when Islam came to the Malay world we became Muslims.

I got no problem talking about our past. But what needs to be talked about is the fact that Malays willingly change our religion from Buddha to Islam. Malays didn't fight with each other, we didn't destroy our temples, we didn't have any form of religous tensions.

We willingly and wholeheartedly change our religion from Buddha to Islam.

Dear KrazyBananaz,

TQ for your input. But I think the problem we see Malays right now is that they are letarghic.

And i believe this letarghic mindset is partly derived from the downspiral trend of all great peoples whom had enjoyed their stint at greatness, i.e. Turks, Greeks, Romans/Italians/ Egyptians.

Now to overcome this letarghic mindset is very difficult and as such it has never been done before. great people have ceased to become great again.

I think it's in the human's DNA. We can only become group as a race only once.

After that it's the turn of other people. It's how GOd demonstrate His fairness.

Even in the Muslim world, it's always has not been Arabs that led the Muslim world. In fact, the Turks had led the Muslims longer than the Arabs.

In short, what I am saying, as a people, your turn to become great can exist only once. After that, it's the turn of the other people.

MY REPLY: No, in fact it was because of conversion to Islam that Malays enjoyed a second stint o greatness in the MAlay Archipelago.

But the greatness was not as large as Srivijaya because there were so many small governments around.

At that time, each Sultante considers themselves to be a branch of the Ottoman Empire. So there is no need for a unified MAlay-Muslim government.
