Muslims Should Wear Safety Helmets Then Serban When Riding Motorbikes

The lesson above is a concept in Islam called “Fiqh Al Awlawiyat” (Fiqh based on importance). We must always put the ”wajib”(compulsory) first before the “optional”. Islam does not advocate its followers to put their lives on the line simply because they want to adhere to an “optional” ruling. Even in Islamic regulation that is “wajib”(compulsory), there are areas where Islam allows exceptions. There are even times when liquor becomes permissible, pork becomes permissible and many more examples.

I will have to agree with Wong Chun Wai this time. But my reasoning will of course be different from his.

Why do I say this? In Islam, wearing a serban is considered “sunnah” or “optional”. But guarding one’s faculties or body parts is “wajib”(compulsory). That is why it is “haram” (prohibited) for Muslims to intentionally hurt themselves. They cannot deliberately cut off one finger, or cut off one leg without any strong justification.

They can however cut off a limb if it’s related to medical reasons i.e. diabetes. Therefore, in the case of wearing motorcycle helmets, I hold the opinion that wearing a safety helmet takes precedence over wearing a serban.

I’d like to suggest that a helmet can be worn over the serban. Just get a bigger helmet for those who do not wish to take off their serban. Please remember that in Islam one’s limbs and body parts are one’s responsibility to God. They have to make sure they take good care of it and not easily let it be exposed to harm. In Islam, one’s faculties is not the sole and absolute rights. It is a responsibility from God upon them.

I call upon the Mufti of Kelantan to make a ruling on this issue, and make it fast. I for one will take off my serban and wear a helmet if I am riding a motorbike. I have ridden a motorbike before and I have been involved in a motor cycle accident before.

Alhamdullillah, I was wearing a safety helmet as it saved my head from getting scraped along the tar road. I remember getting hit, and I remember feeling the pain. In an accident there is no room for u to maneuver. Everything happens in a blink of an eye. Within that split second, anything can happen to you. You could either escape injury altogether or your life could end there and then. All this within a blink of an eye. So, it pays to be prepared. Trust me, I have personal experience and I thank God everyday for allowing me to live.

I also saw scrapes on my safety helmet. If I weren't wearing a safety helmet, that scrape would've been on my face and I would've lost an ear.

In fact, I want the government to make a ruling making all helmets to be full-face type and not the normal type where the face area is open. As a result of that I injured my chin and my cheek and until today there are still scars. If I had worn a full face helmet, God willing, my face would have been saved from injury. But a full face helmet is too expensive. With regulations, it will force supply to jump and thus reducing the cost.

The lesson above is a concept in Islam called “Fiqh Al Awlawiyat” (Fiqh based on importance). We must always put the ”wajib”(compulsory) first before the “optional”. Even in Islamic regulation that is “wajib”(compulsory), there are areas where Islam allows exceptions. There are even times when liquor becomes permissible, pork becomes permissible and many more examples.

I also call upon all Muslims to practice “Fiqh Al Awlawiyat” so as to guard the image of Islam. Islam is not unrealistic, Islam is not insensible, Islam is not inconsiderate. Islam takes into consideration sensibly. Please do not smear the good name of Islam.

As for comparison to the Sikh religion, all I have to say is that Islam has different set of rulings as compared to our Sikh brothers. For one, wearing a serban is not compulsory as compared to the Sikh religion.

And let me assure you, PAS and Kelantan state government has never issued orders to replace “helmet” with “serban”.
